Review: Lindsey Cook

Talented San Diego singer-songwriter Lindsey Cook testifies to an up beat on her new EP, Cold Days. Cook poses quintessential girl questions and dishes confessional anecdotes throughout.

Her emotions are best displayed on her acoustic songs, which should have been the focus of this EP. Unfortunately, bare-bones is largely shunned for a fully fleshed-out band sound. 'Know Me a Minute,' sends a catchy, Lisa Loeb-like feel-good vibe with the lyrics 'You will find I'm playing safe / and I'm crossing lines singing.'

What's safe on Cold Days are the lyrics, which provide only sporadic detail despite a sense that Cook possesses a complicated personality that could show more. The music is Southern California cool, backed by Andrew Heine (bass, piano) and Damon De La Paz on drums.

It's good, but it would shine even more if Cook embraced her heartache and traded in surface pep for a more languished tone. After all, if she's so emotionally complex, then why is her music so damn chill?
