Review: The Electric Chair

Ocean Beach is known for this salon gem – The Electric Chair. When you’re strolling down Newport Avenue at night, you’re sure to notice the bright Electric Chair sitting on display, attracting passersby to the quirky OB salon.

The Electric staff says they are a rarity in the salon business, no copping of attitudes here, and they emphasize a working knowledge of the industry at large. Not only is the staff outgoing and diverse – the atmosphere encourages guests to rock out. The Electric Chair plays the latest and greatest music videos throughout the salon, artwork completely covers the walls, and the vibe is never kitsch. An archway displaying bottle caps and paintings of rock ‘n’ rollers catches your eye and leaves you winded, but in a refreshing way that matches your new look. It is impossible not to feel hip in this salon, as the guests next to you might be getting Dreadlocks or Japanese Straightening.

Permanent waves, extensions, corrective color, highlights, single process tinting, and haircutting are also offered. Using several products to pamper guests, The Electric Chair offers Tigi and L’Oreal Professional, Enjoy, and the complete line of Knotty Boy Dread Products. The earliest appointment time is around 9am, which suits most of their clientele, consisting mostly of the OB artsy crowd, just fine.

What sets The Electric Chair apart from typical San Diego salons is their dedication to throwing occasional fashion and art shows. Rock ‘n’ roll turns heads – and you can’t rock fashion without electric hair, that’s most certain.
